A recent speech at the 2019 Hemp Business Summit made by FDA’s Principal Associate Commissioner for Policy summarized the key reasons why the FDA is still evaluating the use of CBD in food or dietary supplements.
The Commissioner stated “I want to reiterate how excited we are about the potential uses of CBD and other hemp and hemp-derived products” and that “The science needs to catch up.”
Overall, the FDA wants to be as transparent and informative as possible while still protecting and promoting public health. The Commissioner stated that “We treat cannabis and cannabis derivatives, including cannabinoids like CBD, the same as we do any other substance” and “Under current law, it’s unlawful to sell a food or a dietary supplement with CBD in interstate commerce.”
