LAB carries out the determination of methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone for the cosmetic sector by applying the ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry method.

Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) and methylisothiazolinone (MI) are heterocyclic compounds used as preservatives in cosmetics and industrial products with biocidal activity. These compounds can cause skin sensitization and allergic skin diseases such as contact dermatitis. Their presence in cosmetics is studied and regulated for causing allergic reactions in around 2-4% of patients who undergo epicutaneous tests.

These preservatives can be found in wet wipes (make-up remover wipes, baby wipes, intimate hygiene, etc.), hand soaps, shampoos, moisturizers, hand lotions, cleaning products (dishwashers, glass-ceramic cleaners), paints, varnishes, etc. Even if an allergic reaction is not produced, it could occur after continued use of these products for an extended period of time. The European Commission banned the use of these compounds in 2015 in products that do not involve rinsing, such as body lotions. The EU regulates cosmetics through the Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 which guarantees consumers’ safety.
